Secondary storage devices /Introduction to computers

Secondary storage devices :-
There are various secondary storage devices available in the market. The characteristics of each device are different. The need of application and organization of files determines which type of storage media is to be used.

1)hard disk drive : (Winchester drive)
It is heart of the computer. Shard disk drive (HDD) is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using rapidly discs (platters) coated with magnetic material. An HDD retains it's data even when powered off. Data is read in a random-access manner, meaning individual blocks of data can be store or retrieved in any order rather than just sequentially. An HDD consists of one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating discs (platters) with magnetic heads arranged on a moving actuator arm to read and write data to the surfaces.

CD: (Compact disc)
Compact disk (CD) is portable disk having data storage capacity between 650-700 MB. It can hold large amount of information such as music, full-motion videos, and text etc. CDs can be either  read only or read write type.
CD can store the large amount of data compare to floppy disk.
CD R; CD recordable; we are able to write until it's capacity is full.
CD ROM: read only memory. We can not write data in it.
CD RW:CD Rewritable, we are name as E or F drive.

Alternatively referred to as a floppy or fpoppy disk, a floppy diskette was originally created in 1967 by IBM to help have an alternative to buying hard drives that were extremely expensive at the time and were not through of as something to be used with a standard computer.  Below is a brief history of each of three major floppy diskettes Today, these disks have been replaced by writable discs and USB thumb drives.

According to Size :
5,25 inch Floppy Disk -Storage Size
Low Density Capacity 360 KB
High Density Capacity 1.2 MB,
3.5 inch Floppy Disk -Storage Size
Low Density Capacity 720 KB
High Density Capacity 2.88 MB
The most common ones most people are familiar with were 1.44 MB

Pocket CD
Mini CDs, or "pocket CDs " are cds with a smaller diameter and one third the capacity.
Pocket CD-recordable discs are able to store up to 185MB of data or record up to 21 minutes of music,  graphics,  or digital video clips on a 3-inch diameter disc.  In MP3 formula,  Pocket CD-R discs can hold up to 3 hours of compressed audio.  Ideal for storing resumes, portfolios or music demos,  these compact discs go wherever you do.

Benefits :
1) 185MB /21 minute stronger capacity
2) Compatible with CD drives up to 3 hours of 32x speed
3) In MP3 formut , record up to 3 hours of compressed audio
4) Limited Lifetime Warranty

Magnetic Tapes
Magnetic tape is a medium for magnetic recording,  made of a thin magnetizable coating on a long,  narrow strip of plastic film.  It was developed in Germany,  based on magnetic wire recording.  Devices that record and play back audio and video using magnetic tape is a tape drive (tape unit,  streamer g.

Pen Drive :
It is at type of University Serial Cable (USB)  flash drive.  It is a kind of memory card that can be plugged into a computer's USB port.  It is termed "Pen drive " with reference to its size.  It is small and compact thus making it fit in to the palm of our hand.  It is often flat and rectangular like a highlighter pen.  A pen drive is used to store data and has a storage capacity of 64MB to 32GB.  It is removable and Rewritable.  It is mostly used as a backup for CD-ROMs or floppy disks.

Zip Drive :
A zip drive is a removable storage device that securely stores all your important computer data magnetically,  Zip drive and Zip disks are durable portable,  easy -to-use,  and extremely efficient.  A zip disk of 250 MB,  250MB capacity can store the same amount of data as 173 floppy disks.  Zip disk are available in 100 MB,  250MB or the NEW 750 MB capacity.  You can between built -in (internal) or portable (external)  version of the reliable Zip drive,  depending on your needs.

Advantage :_"-
1) Reliable than make external storage devices like CD,  floppy.  etc
2)Easily Transportation...  in case of CD we need a pouch...  here by using Neck Hangar...  people are Hanging in Their necks.
3) Can used as a BOOTABLE device
4) No prior software needed to Write or Read data..  in case of CD writing we need software like Nero etc;

Memory Card
A memory card or flash card is an electronic flash memory data storage used for storing digital information.  They are commonly used in many electrons devices,  including Digital cameras, mobile phones,  laptop computers,  MP3 players and vidio game
consoles.   They are small,  re-recordable , and able to retain data without power.
There are a handful of different types of memory cards on the market,  each varying in size,  compatibility,  and storage capacity.  The most commonly used memory card are listed below.
1) CompactFlash (CF)
2) MicroSD
3) MMC
4) SD Card
5) SDHC Card
6) SmarrMedia Card
7)Sony Memory Stick
8) xD -Picture Card

CD-ROM :-
CD-ROM (Compact Disk Only Memory)  employs optical storage technology as against magnetic storage technology used in floppy and hard disks.  A CD-ROM disk comes in a standard size of 12 CM. It's maximum storage capacity is 660 minutes. Thus a single disc is equivalent to approximately 400 floppy discs of 1.44 KB capacity or 1500 floppy discs of 360 kb capacity. One CD-ROM can store up to 2,50,000 pages (A4size) of text. It offers numerous features unrivalled by current magnetic media. Thus CD-ROM is capable of storing a vast amount of information and it is very compact, more reliable and durable as compared to magnetic discs. These properties make these CD-ROM ideal for the discribution of computer software, pictures, training materials, data bases, newspaper and encyclopedias. As the next suggests, you can only read data from the CD-ROM. The data is stored on CD in such a way that it can't be erased. Also you can't write anything on CD having some pre-recorded information. This feature makes it more reliable because once data is store on a CD it will be permanent and will get corrupt due to a number of read operation.

Digital video disk (DVD) :
Digital video disk (DVD) is introduced by Philips and Sony is 1995. It is an optical storage device that looks the same as a CD. ADVD has the same dimensions as a standard CD but cannot be read by a CD player, although a DVD player can read standard CDs, DVD can store up to 4.7 gigabyte if data.
Digital video disk (DVD) is similar to a CD but has larger storage capacity and enormous clarity. Depending upon the disk type it can store several gigabytes of data. DVDs are primarily used to store music or movie and can be played back on your television or the computer too. These are not Rewritable.
DVD R:CD recordable, we are able to write until it's capacity is full.
DVD ROM:read only memory. We can not write data in it.
DVD RW:CD Rewritable. We are name as E or Drive.
